Air Managers and Exhaust Chimneys

Great Lakes Exhaust chimney serves as a duct that assists in the removal of hot air from ES Server enclosures. This process of directing and removing exhaust air can be accelerated through the use of a chimney fan tray. A soft grommet seal at the top of the chimney ensures a tight fit between the chimney and the ceiling. The chimney is available in two different sizes with varying ranges of adjustability.

When enclosures in a row do not align with ceiling tiles and the overhead duct system, the Flexible Duct Chimney Kit is an ideal solution! The kit comes with a 24" x 24" ceiling panel to be installed in the drop ceiling. Black polyester hose attaches to the ceiling panel and an adapter on the top of the enclosure.

The Great Lakes Adjustable Air Manager mounts to the bottom of an ES Server enclosure, “managing” the flow of conditioned air into the enclosure. An adjustable slide allows the amount of air to be adjusted as necessary, while maintaining raised floor pressure throughout the data center. Aisle Containment Doors

Many times cooling challenges cannot be met simply by expanding infrastructure or adding additional CRAC units. The strategy behind containment is to either capture as much conditioned air as possible or isolate and remove as much exhaust as possible.

Cold Aisle Containment

Use aisle containment doors to create a volume of conditioned air. The area in front of enclosures is saturated with cold air and is able to be focused where it is needed the most, in front of the equipment mounted within the enclosure. This strategy eliminates the need of flood cooling throughout the data center and greatly reduces bypass airflow.

Heated exhaust is vented into the hot aisle which is contained by aisle doors. This volume of hot air is returned to the CRAC unit, creating a more efficient cooling circuit; higher exhaust temperatures result in improved cooling from the CRAC unit.

Baffle Kits
EN and ES baffle kits

Baffle Kits create proper airflow for switches and side-to-side airflow equipment, as suggested by manufacturers such as Cisco. Cool air is channeled into the equipment along the right side and exhaust air is directed out along the left side of the equipment. Kits are tool-less and easily attach to rails outside of the EIA mounting profile. 

Based on your switch/equipment, choose the appropriate EN enclosure or ES enclosure. Take into consideration your cable management, cooling, and power needs; each enclosure addresses these needs in different ways. Baffle Kit part numbers are specific to EN or ES Enclosures. 

The Baffle Kit Matrix below shows which kits accommodate various Cisco switches. Other brands of side-to-side airflow equipment can also be mounted. NOTE: Although equipment may physically fit into a Great Lakes enclosure, with or without brackets, customers must also review and comply with the equipment manufacturer's installation and other requirements. For example, the E and ES Series Enclosures, when in an open frame configuration, can physically support the installation of a Cisco 7018 Series switch; however, the E and ES Series Enclosure frame designs do not provide the airflow space clearance required by Cisco.

Great Lakes' EN (Enhanced Networking) Series of enclosures is designed to support the installation of Cisco switches and other side-to-side airflow equipment. The EN Series has the airflow space clearances that are currently required and has accessories (including baffle kits) that are designed to support proper operational conditions. The Brush Grommet Rail Kit mounts to the outside (does not interfere with the EIA pattern) of Great Lakes mounting rails to prevent hot air (from the rear of servers) from recirculating to the front of servers. The kit is an easy upgrade to existing Great Lakes enclosures, as it installs with tool-less hardware.

Temperature Strip
Upsite Technologies Temperature Strip

Great Lakes now offers Upsite Technologies temperature strips; with a self-adhesive backing, the temperature strip can easily attach to most surfaces within your enclosure. Displaying both Fahrenheit (in increments of 2°) and Celsius(in increments of °1) readings, the temperature strip is accurate to within +/- 1°C. Actual temperature is denoted when liquid crystals in the temperature strip display green. When brown and blue appear on the strip, the actual temperature is between these two numbers. Temperatures will fall into one of three ranges as indicated by the colors at the bottom of the strip.
